Study in Attention — Ananas comosus (c. 1705)

Study in Attention — Ananas comosus (c. 1705) is an early eighteenth-century work by Maria Sibylla Merian, created as part of her groundbreaking study Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium.
Rather than presenting the pineapple as novelty or ornament, Merian approaches it through sustained observation. Structure, surface, and surrounding life are rendered with clarity and restraint. Maria worked outside institutional systems at a time when scientific authority was rarely extended to women. Her method was built differently. Direct study. Repetition. Time spent looking.
That approach is visible in the composition.
